Back-To-school season driver safety tips
Back-to-school season is in full swing here in Pittsburgh, and the roads are starting to look a little different. Suddenly, school buses are back on the roads, crosswalks are filled with students, and parents are rushing to get the kiddos dropped off before work. Add in some early morning traffic and a quick coffee stop, and it’s easy to see why fall is one of the busiest—and riskiest—times to be on the road.
At Glenn’s Towing, we’ve seen firsthand how a small mistake behind the wheel can lead to big problems. Whether you have a fender bender in the school pickup line or a breakdown during your morning commute, a little preparation and patience can go a long way! Here are some key reminders to help keep you and your family safe this season:
Watch for School Buses
When those flashing red lights come on, you must stop…it’s the law! Children may be crossing the street unexpectedly, or running around the bus. Even when the bus is just slowing down, keep your distance, and stay prepared!
Slow Down in School Zones
School zones are designed to protect students who are walking or bicycling to class. Be mindful of reduced speed limits and keep an eye out for children, crossing guards and parents who are double-parked during drop-off.
Put Your Phone Away
In today’s world, everyone is multi-tasking, but when you are behind the wheel, it’s not the time! Distracted driving is one of the biggest dangers we see on the road, especially when kids are nearby. Even a quick glance at your phone could mean not seeing a child stepping out onto the street….it’s just not worth it! And as you know, Pennsylvania is now hands-free, so put those phones down!
Expect the Unexpected
Not every driver on the road handles traffic safely. On your drive to school or work, you will see parents speeding with children in the car, kids darting between vehicles, or impatient drivers trying to race past a bus. Personally, on our morning walk, we see drivers running the stop sign by our house, endangering lives daily. Stay alert, leave space between vehicles and be ready to react at all times.
Check Your Vehicle Before the Winter Weather Arrives
The change of season is a perfect time to give your car, truck or SUV a quick inspection. Check your brakes, tires, lights and battery before the weather cools down. A quick once-over now can prevent you from needing to call Glenn’s Towing down the road.
Back-to-school season is all about new routines, fresh starts and keeping communities safe. A little extra patience and attention on the road can make a big difference. And remember—if you find yourself stuck on the side of the road, Glenn’s Towing is just a phone call away.
