Heads Up…Deer Are Everywhere!
As winter begins in Western Pennsylvania, the snow isn’t the only thing appearing along our roadways—deer season is in full swing. From October through January, deer activity spikes dramatically, especially at dawn and dusk. For drivers across Pittsburgh and the surrounding counties, that means an increased risk of collisions.
At Glenn’s Towing, we see the aftermath of deer-related accidents every year. To help keep you safe on the road (and help you avoid an unexpected call to us), here are essential tips for navigating deer season safely.
Tip #1: Stay Alert at Dusk & Dawn
The most active times for deer are in the mornings from 5:00-7:00 a.m. and the evenings from 5:00-9:00 p.m. During those times especially, it’s important that you slow down, stay alert and scan the sides of the road.
Tip #2: Use High Beams When Safe
High beams help illuminate deer eyes along the road and make them easier to spot—just be sure to dim them when other vehicles approach.
Tip #3: Watch for Deer Crossing Signs
Those yellow signs aren’t just for decoration! PennDOT places them in areas with the highest crash rates. Pay extra attention when you spot one.
Tip #4: Don’t Swerve!
This is one of the biggest—and most dangerous—mistakes drivers make. Swerving can lead to hitting oncoming traffic, going off the road, or losing control. If a deer runs in front of your vehicle:
Brake firmly
Stay in your lane
Hold the wheel steady
Tip #5: Remember That Deer Travel in Groups
If you see one deer cross, expect more to follow behind. Slow down and stay alert!
Tip #6: Avoid distractions
Distracted driving is always dangerous, but during deer season especially, even a few seconds can mean the difference between avoiding a collision and ending up on the shoulder with a damaged front end calling a tow truck.
Tip #7: Wear your seatbelt
It’s simple but life-saving. The majority of severe injuries in deer-related crashes involve unbelted drivers. And, remember, in Pennsylvania, it’s the law. Click-it or ticket!’
What to Do If You Hit a Deer
Pull over safely and turn on your hazard lights.
Stay inside your vehicle—injured deer can be unpredictable
Call the police to report the incident (important for insurance).
Take photos of the scene and vehicle damage.
